More 1990 and 2019 - Here and There

August 2019... having a little more time for this post than usual, I invested some of that time in picture selection and placement, so the pictures - for the most part - match up (generally, not exactly) with the video links they are near.  A few pictures are randomly placed, but not many.
Mt. Takao - I don't have much time for traveling, so I really appreciate how close (and convenient) Mt. Takao is to Tokyo.  Well... Mt. Takao is Tokyo actually - part of it, so close to the developed part of Tokyo I should say.

Okay, here's a random picture - from December 1990, taken in Shinjuku Station near the South Exit.  One difference between then and now is that they have been putting more and more shops within the stations, so there is less open space now than before (within the station that is).

It used to be really common to open some of the windows on the trains when the weather was nice, but it's pretty rare now - largely due to a certain percentage of the population who seem to be absolutely terrified of fresh air....

Tourism... to a point is a great thing - people can get away from their usual routines and experience another culture, but at this point in history, there are too many very large aircraft with too many seats sold very cheaply, and hordes of people are pouring into various tourist destinations in the world - disrupting life there for the locals, driving up rents (thanks to the despicable practice of turning apartments into sneaky hotels, etc.) and as it is now, tourism is generally not a good thing at all.  It's irritating and resented at present and is on the verge of becoming downright despised (or intensely hated?... how to describe the feeling....)  Too many outsiders bumbling around interfering in people's day-to-day lives is not a good thing at all.  Back before the flood, you would see a tourist and say hello, and ask where they were from, etc.  Now when you see one, you tend to think "Another bloody tourist...."

Regarding EV-67 - I made that one to mention how there were more tourists both before and after the bubble economy years.  What happened is that when the yen suddenly strengthened dramatically, tourism fell off due to Japan being much more expensive to visit than people were used to.  What's changed is airfare has come down-down-down and people travel on the cheap now - staying at sneaky hotels, etc.  The reason I got onto that is that I get comments from time-to-time about how few foreigners there seem to have been in 1990-91 Tokyo, and the comments are generally along the lines of "It must have been nice before the flood of tourists came...."

Regarding this picture (above).  I hate it.  It's a terrible picture, but since there are plans to tear that building down, I decided to use it for its content value.  There are content pictures and picture-pictures.  Picture-pictures don't need to have any special content, they just need to be good pictures.  Ideally, a photo is both artistically good and has some content... unfortunately with this photo above, it has only content.  I mention all that, because normally I wouldn't use such a poorly composed picture....
- Now, the picture below - is better, and pairs with the photo above since this is a view of the building's roof.  This whole rooftop area used to be full of chairs and tables and crowded with people enjoying a beer with yakitori, etc. under nighttime summer skies....

Writing by Hand - Cursive vs. Printing

- August 2nd, 2019 (金) 8:03 a.m. (大井町駅隣) - Sitting in a coffee shop - looking out onto an Oimachi morning.  Recorded music playing in the background, a student bent over his studies to my right - very worn and marked up textbook on the counter in front of him that he references as he writes things on a piece of paper next to the book.  People walking by in front of the coffee shop window, people sitting at tables behind me - more people to my left lined up, ordering and then paying for their coffees....
- All that text above took about... four(?) minutes to write.  it wasn't rushed, mind you, as I stopped now and then to take in my surroundings, but still, all of that could have been more precisely conveyed to you with a 30-second video clip... technically anyway.  Socially it would be very difficult.  Firstly, the music industry and/or musicians might not be pleased that the recorded music the coffee shop is playing had leaked onto the soundtrack of my video.  Faces would have to be avoided.  The student might not feel good about someone sitting right next to him recording his studies....
- I was just talking about this in a JV/EV video set this morning, and that was hard enough.  Generally the JV/EV videos are easy, as the main point of them is the audio, but I walked into a set of narrow izakaya streets to do it and people kept suddenly appearing from around corners, etc., and the narrowness of the streets meant there was nowhere to aim the camera but down while passing.
- Stopping to think about it now, I see there were two factors I didn't foresee (I should have, but...): 1) While there are moments and places in Tokyo without people, they tend to be few and far between.  You should never assume any place at any time in Tokyo will be devoid of people.  2) A narrow lane with innumerable side pathways that people can suddenly pop out of is - as I discovered this morning - not an optimal place to record if your aim is to avoid recording faces.  So, almost ironically (not really ironic when you think about it, as it's just logical), a fairly wide open space where people are walking about (of course - this is Tokyo) can be ideal for avoiding faces.  After all, the goal isn't to have no people in the video, it's just not to show their faces in detail.  In an open space you have ample visual warning of approaching humans and can aim the camera elsewhere before their faces come into close range.
- The student to my right has put away the well-worn book, pulled out a smaller (and newer) one, as well as a laptop computer.  He now alternates between reading from the book, looking thoughtfully out the window, and typing text into the computer - writing a report for school no doubt....
- ... A coffee shop employee came around and explained a multi-use plastic coffee filter newly developed - along with a sample of coffee made from it.  なるほどですね - いつか買うかも....
- How am I writing this?  Onto an A3 sheet of paper (folded twice to make it A5, and with the A5 sections numbered 1-8.  I'm now on page/section-3).  The more I write, the more I will have to type into a computer later.  If I were rich, I'd have one of those very thin, very light new laptop computers with me and I'd just type this straight off... but I'm poor (financially challenged?) and the laptop computer I have is thick and heavy....  Since my backpack is really too heavy already, it doesn't seem worth the wear and tear on my spine to have it with me.  At this moment, I'd like to have it with me, but once I leave this coffee shop, I'll be glad not to have that bulk and weight strapped to my back.
- However - there's something else....  There's a very real difference between typing text into a computer and writing it by hand.  There are multiple elements to this.
- The first thing that comes to mind is the flow of the words onto the page (written in cursive - I don't think I would enjoy writing by hand if I had to print each letter out.  Wait, let me write a sentence that way:
- OK - this is being written one letter at a time.  It's more legible - but tiring, since the pen is constantly being lifted on and off of the page.
- Phew!  Just those two sentences were surprisingly tiring to write!  A few months ago I read an article on-line (regarding fewer and fewer students being taught how to write in cursive) that stated the original reason for cursive writing had to do with quill pens that needed to be dipped in ink.  That might also be a factor (I've never written that way, but I don't think the author of that article has, either), but right here, right now, in comparing the two writing styles on this page, with the same pen in my hand, I can unequivocally state that it is much, much easier, smoother, and faster to write in cursive.
- The other thing is the lack of distractions.  All you have to think about is physical space on the page, ink in the pen, and your thoughts.  With a computer there are any number of distractions:  How much battery time is left?  Keep saving ([Ctrl]+[S]), when did I last back up these files I'm working on?  Incoming YT message from Australia regarding 1992 video of Sydney... it's an insult (higher blood pressure "Don't respond! Don't respond! Never respond to sub-human neanderthals!"  Back to writing... "Forget the troll! Forget the troll!"  Writing resumes... Incoming YT message from Japan... a friendly and constructive comment, along with a question... "Alright - better respond to this one."  Switch text entry over to Japanese, compose answer, check kanji in a dictionary, send... Get back to writing.  "Where was I...?  What was I about to say...?"  Write half a sentence and... incoming FB comment on post from yesterday, etc. etc.
- So, right now?  I write away onto paper in blue ink with my ball-point pen.  I'm on A5 section #5 now (reverse side of A3 sheet of paper).  No interruptions (aside from the new-type coffee filter deal), but some fatigue from writing for close to an hour....  Well... time to go, so I'll stop here.
- (2019/08/04) - Typing up the above didn't take too long... it's more about the extra steps involved than time really.  Reading over the text, I wonder what I would have written had I been using a computer at the time instead of pen and paper.  I'm fairly certain it would have been something quite different....  I don't want to exclusively write by hand, but from time-to-time, I enjoy it, and it's a wonderful thing that all you need to write is paper and pen.  Going on and doing something with that text requires machinery, but the act of writing itself requires no machines at all.  Well... I suppose you could almost call a pen a sort of simple machine, but then there are pencils, or anything that can leave a mark.

Underground Coffee Shop (in the subway)

(2019/07/23 (火) 7:50 a.m.) - Central Tokyo.  Underground coffee shop (within the subway system).  Looking around on this Tuesday morning, I note the new (from my perspective anyway) and typical arrangement for 21st century coffee shops and fast food restaurants:  Electrical outlets in front (or to the side) of every seat power and/or charge the micro-computers nearly everyone has in front of them - with all users looking down at their devices and poking the small touch screens with one finger (except one soul using a laptop computer, who has an actual keyboard to use)....
- Probably 70-80% of the men are wearing stark-white shirts, which I'm wondering about... are they a throwback to the pre-bubble years?  Certainly when I came to Japan in 1984, it seemed like nearly all the men were wearing stark-white shirts... or is it just because it's summer and stark-white is cooler out in the sun?  Whatever... what I can say about stark-white shirts is that I began to see more people wearing shirts with strips and color during the bubble economy years - along with interesting and colorful ties, the design of which has gone back to 1950's style standard stripes (which is not necessarily a complaint... simple designs are often good).
- What really is different now is how people never seem to be where they are but instead concentrate on distant people and events via their micro-computers.  Since text entry is cumbersome and slow via the touch screens, people seem to write less and less.  (I'm writing this now via pen and paper... writing into a small notebook.  To use the text, I'll have to type it into a computer later.)
- Speaking of writing, what I'd really like to do now is walk around the room recording video and sound... and you could see and hear the space for yourselves, but the arrangement of the seats is such that there's no way I could meaningfully record it without also disturbing/irritating the people here, so all I can do is pull out pen and paper and write.
- To the current young generation... well, to those in the current young generation who do not see a need for writing things by hand - this is an example of why writing is still important. Aside from being a way to record things when you can't use a camera, you can mix in your impressions with the description of the space you are in and writing by hand via pen and paper is light years faster than touch screen entry of text.... Light years? Well... it's way faster! And there's a fluidity to writing by hand that computer text entry interferes with.
- 8:14 a.m. - I enjoy writing by hand, but it does consume time!  (Compared to typing on a proper keyboard that is!)  A few people at the entrance to the coffee shop are looking around at the full coffee shop - willing some people to leave so they'll have somewhere to sit.  I and the person sitting to my right have been here about 25 minutes.  at least 70% of the people here were here when I arrived and they are poking away at the screens of their micro-computers.  They look like they've been here for a while and will probably stay here until just before 9:00 a.m. when they'll head off to work.
- Ah!  It suddenly occurs to me that maybe that should have been my first observation.  Flex-time has largely disappeared, so the only way to escape the pressure of the crush-rush peak commuter hours is to leave a couple of hours (or more) early and then find a way to kill time on the other end of the journey (until the entrance to the workplace opens).  Actually, that's precisely why I'm here myself.  The earliest trains are full of (mostly) men in their fifties, and then as 9:00 a.m. nears, you see more and more young people - including a tiny percentage of dangerous young males too eager to engage in physical confrontation... it is due to them that "Violence is Illegal!" posters have been periodically put up on train station walls.
- 8:25 a.m. - No one waiting at the door and people are suddenly heading for the exit one-by-one.  Time for me to join them and head off to work.
- 7:20 p.m. - Ginza, Akihabara, Shinjuku - Foreign couple on Ginza side street... descent into Kyobashi Station... sparklingly renovated Kyobashi Station via old narrow atmospheric stairs from street level.  Akihabara - more old things gone, empty lots, new construction, used computer street with small army of Kissaten (メード喫茶) Women handing out fliers, used equipment with decent CPU's but not very much memory.  Walk up hill to Ochanomizu Station, hamburger for dinner, Chuo Line to Shinjuku, interesting crowds, difficult/problematic to record, so... no video, a place to sit, a little time to think.  Thoughts of a locked door to a roof in a burning building... memories of three decades ago when roof access was typical... open fire escape stairs, unlocked roof access doors....

1990 and 2019 - Here and There

Another batch of videos - this time from the years 1990 and 2019.  The most recently uploaded stuff is at the bottom (posted chronologically, with older posts at the top and newer as you go down the page), and so what's in mind at the moment is my trip to Chigasaki and Tsujido in 2019 and my trip to Hakone in early December 1990.  What with my time machine trips to 1990 and 1991, I end up thinking about what has changed, what remains, and the nature of the flow of time....

The pictures I'm putting on this page are recent ones and (for the most part) they are unrated to video titles and links they are near - like the photo above, which was taken in 2019, but is by a 1990 video title and link.  Conceptually I'd prefer to have the photos illustrate the video titles and links they are near, but there isn't enough time to do it that way.

New People...

I wrote a fairly long reply to a comment on one of my YouTube videos, so I thought I'd put that in here as well.  The comment I received was this: "I wonder how different I'd find Tokyo after so long. I left in December 1992."
Time and change are something I'm often thinking about, so this is something I could go on and on about, but for now, here's my short (or long, depending on your point of view) reply:  "Thinking of this question, I immediately recall an experience of mine one evening in Shibuya.  Back in the 1990-93 period when I was taking analog video, I used to go to and/or through Shibuya at least once a week, but then my schedule and work changed and there was a period of many years where I didn't go there at all (more than a decade maybe?).  Then one day I was feeling nostalgic for the place, so I went back for a look.  I arrived one evening and joined the sidewalk crowds of young people and just as I was expecting to feel "Just like the old days!" an uncomfortable feeling crept up on me, so I focused on and tuned into my surroundings to figure out what it was.  Basically, this is what I thought/perceived/realized while walking down that sidewalk: 'Why do I feel uncomfortable?  Why does this feel so different?  Things look pretty much the same... it's pretty much the same young crowd on the sidewalk... !!!!!  Wait!  No!  It isn't the same young crowd!  It's the children of the young crowd I used to walk among!  No wonder it feels different!  It's a completely new group of people!  The people I walked here with before are out there somewhere, but they're doing different things and no longer dating in Shibuya....  These people I'm walking with now were not on planet earth back then!  No wonder if feels different!  Different people!'"

Meguro River & Other Areas in Tokyo 1991 & 2019

May 1st, 2019 - the first day of a new era in Japan called "Reiwa" (令和).  I was going to go out and take video yesterday, the last day of the Heisei (平成) era, and today, the first day of the Reiwa (令和) era, but then I thought of all the other people who would already be doing that, and decided I didn't really need to join the crowd - the two days will be well-recorded for sure!
I should be posting these video link posts every month, but this is four months' worth... various things - all requiring time - get in the way.  Hopefully I'll find the time next month for another update and it won't be so long next time!
The videos in this batch are from 1990, 1991, and 2019.  I'm going to put some pictures in-between the video titles and links, but they will be independent subject-wise.  I'd prefer to have photos that are relevant to the video titles they are near, but there isn't time to do it that way - not this time anyway.  The dates go back and forth between 1990/1991 and 2019, but each video title begins with the year in the title, so as long as you pay attention to that, it should be clear when they were recorded.

The crowd of people climbing the stairs in the video above had just gotten off of a train that ended its run in Shinjuku.  Shinjuku is said to have the largest number of people using it on a daily basis than any train station in the world, and a large part of that are people who have to change trains there from the Odakyu and Keio Lines (which both end in Shinjuku).

EV-30 Regarding November 2nd 1991 190129
https://youtu.be/8coak7dnjlI

I felt prompted to comment on the amount of material I recorded on November 2nd, 1991 (JV/EV-30) since it was quite a video-intense day.  I would still (from time-to-time) take video in this way, but high numbers of scenes are problematic with the equipment I'm currently using.  There isn't much good to be said about recording video onto tape, but one really great thing is that scenes are automatically compiled one after the other and don't require software to stitch them together.  So with a two-hour tape, you can have as many scenes as you like ready to go out-of-camera.

EV-31 Were Things Better Before or Not 190202
https://youtu.be/OYaXd1N8D0I

Were things better or worse before?  Going back and forth via video time machine, this is something I often think about.  Some elements of this type of comparison are really clear, but a large part of any era is relative to many component parts of time, societies, ways of thinking, lifestyles, etc.
For me personally, the most vexing part of revisiting 1990-93 over and over again for the past twelve(!) years is the realization of how human "overwrite-save" memory corrupts the (remembered) historical record.  I'm interested in the truth and would like to think that memory is something a little more dependable.
I had heard that people overwrite-save memories, rather than just accessing read-only memory, but that aspect of human memory really came home to me when I began watching the video material I had recorded around 17 years before (the tapes went unseen until 2007, when computer hardware progressed to the point where I could begin digitizing the old tapes).
In the intervening years, I had seen several period movies and dramas, with current generation young actors playing young people from that circa 1990 era.  I remember - early on - seeing one of those movies about the "bubble era" and thinking "Huh... young actors pretending to be something they are not..." but as the years went by, and I saw more such dramatizations of the period, they began to seem not so far off the mark... until 2007 when I began reviewing actual scenes of the period that I had seen and recorded myself.  While watching them, a flood of memories (that had been buried under years of inaccurate fictional accounts) came back and I remember looking at the screen of the video time machine and thinking "Yeah... *that's* how it was!"
From that experience, I realized how easily memory can become corrupted.  There are exceptions of course.  Certain events in life generating very powerful emotions seem to record an event powerfully enough that it isn't easily corrupted and is more like "read-only" memory than "overwrite-save" memory.
And... I hesitate to add this here, as it's sort of off-topic... or maybe it's spot-on topic (depending on how you look at it), but that 1990-93 time frame has come to be a strange thing for me.  While the rest of time flows relentlessly forward, for twelve years I've been revisiting 1990-93 via video time machine and those years have come to feel like an unchanging element of current time.....
