Sony CCD-V700 & Sony CCD-V800, etc.

  - I've been meaning to write a blog post on this topic for quite some time, but have kept putting it off... imagining getting into some perfect frame of mind on a perfect day with all other conditions also being perfect.  I write that in sarcasm, but it's not entirely nonsense.  There are times when you're in a settled frame of mind and everything just kind of falls into place and you slide into a comfortable writing space.  But those times are rare, so expecting them in order to write is kind of like saying "I'm not going to write anything any more"... which is more sarcasm, but - again - not entirely sarcastic.  And so I have decided, this Tuesday evening, to fall back on what I learned when I was... ten or something.  (I think I've written about that before - how I discovered the key to writing is to just begin writing anything, and then the words generally keep coming.)  The other element in the background is I'm feeling frustrated today.  Frustrated about what?  None of your business! ;)  So I figure writing will help distract me from my frustration!

 - Time to get to the subject the title promises - the Sony CCD-V700 and Sony CCD-V800 Hi8 video (tape) cameras I used for most of my 1990-93 videos.  The basic thing here - the thing I want to get up on the screen and into the wires, is that I'd like to say "Thank you!" to the designers and engineers of those two camera models (which are very similar).  Among the cameras on the market at the time, they looked pretty good, and the balance of the camera when you had it on (as in "on your hand" since you slipped your hand into a space with a padded strap against the back of your hand) was quite good.  For its time, it was a really great machine.  I had one CCD-V700 and two CCD-V800 machines, as I was taking video on nearly a daily basis, and the complicated and delicate machines would sometimes need to be repaired.  I don't fault the machines for that - they were mechanically complicated with a lot of moving parts and weren't really designed to be used as heavily as I used mine.

 - About that - heavy usage - I actually began by being rather careful with the first Hi8 video camera I bought (a Sony CCD-V900), carefully putting it away in a special case when not recording something, but the common frustration of putting the camera away, and then suddenly seeing something I wanted to take video of led me to just going out with the camera hanging by its neck strap from my neck so it was always handy to use.  The next step was I would turn it off right after recording some scene or other, and then I would see something else I wanted to record, and have to quickly turn it back on.  At some point I began to leave it on longer and longer, assuming that the mechanical wear of fully shutting it down and powering it up over and over was (possibly - I thought) worse for the life of the camera than just leaving it running (meaning the head drum was spinning and the tape was paused).

 - But I have drifted from my intended topic.  The more time goes by, the more I appreciate the existence of those machines at that time.  In the year 2022 (as I write this), everyone records everything all the time, but I often saw things back then that I strongly felt should be recorded for future viewing, and much of that now only exists as recorded images, having long since disappeared from the current times we now live in.  Also, I now realize that even if I had been very careful with the cameras and only used them on special occasions, they would not have been usable now (probably not at all, certainly not in practical terms), so I'm increasingly glad I used all four (CCD-V900, CCD-V700, and two CCD-V800s) heavily - basically using them until they were all broken (after having them all repaired multiple times within the first year of buying them new).

 - ....... Okay, there it is I guess.  Not special sparkling text, but it expresses some of what I wanted to say at least, so I'll post it.

 - Now to cook that fish I bought yesterday (but was too tired to cook) before it goes bad.  I'm tempted to put it off again, but fish doesn't keep so long, so... under the flame it goes!

 - [... passage of time...]  Fish!  Cooked and eaten!  How was it?  Great!  Fantastic!  Really really good!  Now to explain how I cooked it and what it was, I have to do research.  How was it cooked?  Under a flame!  Um... is that broiled?  [Consulting a dictionary - a dictionary I say!  Not the Opinion-net.  My dictionary says: "to cook by direct heat, as on a gridiron over the heat or in an oven under the heat; grill: to broil a steak".  Huh.  I guess it's right, but the heat can be over or under the item being cooked and both methods are called broiled?  Huh.....  What kind of fish did I eat?  さば！ What's that in English?  No idea!  Time for more research.  [Consulting a dictionary....]  Mackerel だって！ I knew the word "mackerel" and I knew the word さば, but didn't ever make the connection between the two before.  Anyway, cooked with the flame overhead, no oil, and then with lemon, salt and pepper, it tasted really quite nice.

Before they installed escalators at (nearly) all the stations in Tokyo, the sight of a wide staircase full of people walking up from the platforms was kind of a remarkable sight - looking somewhat like a flowing river.

At the time, due to the scheduling of the reserved-seat express trains, I tended to go from Shinjuku to Machida via Romance Car train (but not the other way), and it was always the first generation of the train that I rode, so this view stands out for two reasons.  First, I was going in the other direction, from Machida to Shinjuku, and it was a newer type of Romance Car.

I stumbled into an unusual situation on September 19th, 1990 by arriving at the Romance Car platform just in time for the train, and then unwittingly boarding an extra section of the train that had been added specifically for a large group of traveling students.  Since the two parts of the train were separated by control cabs, it wasn't possible to (internally) go from one half to the other half, so I had to stay with the students all the way to Machida.  At the time, I regretted the mistake, but in retrospect, it was a lucky mistake, as it now provides a rare view of a group of 1990 high school students on a long-distance trip together.

I didn't realize it at the time, but I heard soon after taking this view that this building is slated for demolition in the not too distant future.  I was prompted to take out my camera after looking down and being struck with how well maintained and clean the old type tile floor was (not small ceramic tiles, but the larger type, made of some mysterious material).  The tiles have been polished so often over decades (I think) that they have a sort of melted appearance in places where they have worn down.

2014 Maebashi Trip, Ginza, Etc.: 1990 Nihonbashi, Marunouchi, Machida, Miyahara, Kudanshita, Iidabashi, Etc.

The most notable views from 2014 in this batch of 1990 and 2014 videos show several scenes I recorded while taking a day trip to Maebashi.  I don't know exactly why, but I've always liked Maebashi - from the sound of the name, to the relaxed feeling of the area.  I haven't been there often, but when I've gone, I've always enjoyed the area.  It was also nice to ride in the old type JR trains on the Ryomo Line (between Takasaki and Maebashi).

Jumping back 24 years to July 1990, there are views of several areas, mainly the ones listed in the title of this post above.  I think the walkabout clips of the Marunouchi District and of Machida may be the most interesting, along with (shorter) walkabout views of Miyahara (in Saitama) and the Kudanshita and Iidabashi areas (the daytime view that is - the nighttime view is a bit dark, as the lighting was barely enough to take pictures in with the camera I was using at the time).

Other that that, the titles are mostly self-explanatory.  This first short one (immediate below this paragraph) taken in a platform stand-as-you-eat restaurant I like.  The soba noodles were quite good, and it was interesting to look out the window and see the Yamanote Line so close!

This one is overexposed (never mind why, that's a long story), but I left the camera running until the live announcement (from the conductor in the rear of the train) was finished, as I thought it was important to get that recorded.  More and more trains rely on (highly irritating) recordings, so listen and see how much nicer an announcement is from a real live human being.

There is one thing, and one thing only that is good about the recordings - since they are lifeless set things, the volume of the playback is (usually) set at a non-painful level, while with the manual human announcements, sometimes they crank up the volume so loud that it's actually painful, or (the other extreme), it's so quiet that you can't hear what they are saying.

This is far enough out of Tokyo that the atmosphere is quite different.  In going from Tokyo to an area in the country, probably the most striking thing when exiting a station is a sensation of "Where is everybody?", as there appear to be very few people out and about.  But you get used to that rapidly; it's the new normal in matter of about an hour, and then you just relax.  Upon returning to Tokyo, you change trains in one of the busy hub stations, and then you think "!!!!! Wow!!  There are an *amazing* number of people here!!".  But again, within an hour or so, that becomes normal again and you're back where you started (assuming you're a resident of Tokyo).

It's hard to believe that I really haven't seen this before, but I don't remember it.  I just happened to be standing next to it one day, and so took this video to record the zero marker.  Tokyo is considered the zero point of the country and distances are measured from here... I think.  The real center is the center of Nihonbashi Bridge, but I guess this is the rail version at Tokyo Station.

I rather like this... [Above] I don't actually recommend this one.  This first video camera that I was using didn't record night scenes very well, and much of this is so dark it's hard to make sense off.  Still, it captures some elements of the area I walked though and gets more watchable when I get to the river area, which had brighter illumination.

If you're interested in how the Marunouchi District was before the extensive reconstruction it has undergone in the quarter century since this was taken, I definitely recommend this video.

The post-Great Kanto Earthquake concrete buildings of the Marunouchi District (although the Marunouchi Building was actually built before the quake - and survived it well), which were mostly built in the 1930's, were of a solid construction and designed before the advent of air conditioning and florescent lighting, so they had openable windows and were designed to let air circulate though the building.  Modern buildings with their recirculating air systems leave me feeling like a goldfish in a bowl that needs to have the water changed.

Aside from that - there was something very familiar about this area before it was redeveloped.  The redevelopment was done well I think, but I do miss the atmosphere of the old 1930's buildings.

I had intended to spend a couple of hours just walking around in the Machida Station area, but the rain chased me indoors (it was a fine mist that was getting under the umbrella and onto the lens), so the last half of this video is a pretty detailed look inside a couple of the department stores in the area.  This seems historically interesting to me, as there are fewer and fewer of this type of heavily staffed department store.  The new model is cutting costs in any way possible and so typically modern stores only have a skeleton crew - mainly just operating the checkout area.

In 2014, this is just an ordinary thing that everyone is used to, but in 1990, this was very new, and the two people I recorded buying commuter passes from the machine were very clearly using this type of machine for the very first time.

This kind of transition recording is important for future reference I think, as relying on actors from the past (via old movies and TV dramas, etc.) to show people in the present/future how it was always generates mistakes.  This is the real thing.

Back in 1990, there were several times I recorded taking the Odakyu Romance Car to Machida, but the schedule for the trains was such that I usually took a regular express train back to Shinjuku, so this Romance Car ride going in the other direction - from Machida to Shinjuku - is rare (within my videos).  I also left the camera running more than usual, so it's a good record of the scene out a left-side window.

This has some interesting content in it - I only wish I'd spent a little more time and taken a more careful record.  Basically it's Shinjuku Station from the upper exit of the Odakyu Line, into the JR section via the west entrance, and then walking the width of the station and going up to the Saikyo Line platform, with the video ending as I get on a Saikyo Line train.

July 1990... this was the last part of the bubble era, and the beginnings of the end of the bubble era were already starting to happen.  I bring this up, because it was a very slow day in the office this day - thus the woman reading a comic book - and the company went bankrupt within a year of when this was taken.

Thinking back - I remember the uneasy feeling of a too-quiet office... the writing was already on the wall.  The expression I give the camera at the end of this doesn't seem to show any of that, but I was basically just laughing about having recorded over the shoulder of the comic-book-reading woman without her having noticed.
