“Into the Warmth of a Cold Night”

Arctic chill in the castle
So I venture forth
Into the warmth of a cold night
To buy a Christmas Eve Dinner
Under the strangely warm glare
Of florescent tubes

A stranger's smile
Brings me back to humanity

In a cold park
I have my Christmas Eve dinner
With the dark night
As my convivial companion
I toast distant friends across oceans
With my can of cold beer

Happy Holidays my Friends
Thank you for being there

All I can do...
All we can do
Is our best....

Looking for a New Movie to Watch...

I haven't been watching new movies for several years now, so I got on-line and watched several previews (trailers).  The result is that I seem to only want to watch some combination of romance and or comedy.  The Bang!-Bang!-Bang!, Zoom!-Zoom!-Zoom! movies leave me feeling like I've stumbled back into my old high school days or something.  Here are the previews I watched and made a quick note about so I can make a list of things to watch.  The comments (in most cases) are based solely on watching the preview, without having read anything about the movie:

The Color of Time
Man goes back to old hometown and meets complicated current reality and complicated past, etc.  Personal mystery/adventure/discovery - sentimentality?  Seems like it might be interesting...

The Councilor - Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz
Looks like it could be interesting - cool people, bad people, destruction, death.

Palo Alto
Story about High School Life - Teenage pathos/adventure/discovery/danger/etc.  Looks kind of interesting - probably a little uncomfortable to watch (complicated memories of a complicated time...)

Before I Disappear
Druggie guy gets call to go pick up niece.  Unlikely meeting of souls takes places.  Looks like an interesting movie from the trailer....

Suburban Gothic
Comedy Horror movie... No Thanks.  I mean... it looks like it's a funny movie actually, but I really don't like horror movies, not even good ones!

The Lookalike
Dead woman - leading to search for lookalike to carry out some dangerous task.  Hmm... maybe interesting....

Miss Meadows
Sweet woman elementary school teacher is ba*a*s vigilante killer in her free time.  Hmm....

Space Station 76
Science fiction comedy - from trailer looks like retro-60's movie?  I get the feeling I might find it simultaneously amusing and irritating to watch...

The Prince
Bruce Willis action-revenge movie (what else?) in the “Die-Hard” mold it seems.  Maybe good Bang!-Bang! movie to see.  Action, cars banging into each other, chases, people killing each other, etc.  [sigh/laugh]

The Protector 2
Huh... I hadn't heard of the first one.  Looks like a new version of the Jackie Chan series.  At my age, maybe not something I'm all fired up to see.

Reach Me
Self-help book at center of various people's adventures.  Looks like it might be interesting.

Dying of the Light
Nicolas Cage as CIA guy going on revenge trip.  Violence, action, adventure, etc.  In light of the actual deteriorating state of the world - maybe profoundly depressing to watch....  I think I'll pass on this one.

Focus
Will Smith in Big Job con job movie.  Hmm..  Might be interesting.  Bang-bang, zoom-zoom, wow-wow....

Furious 7
Cars!-Cars!-Cars! - Zoom!-Zoom!-Zoom! - So this is the 7th one in the series?  Oookayyy... can't deny it looks entertaining, but at my age I think I'd end up rolling my eyes at lines written for high school students?  Not sure... probably should watch one to see how it plays.

Unbroken
Story of perseverance - and not breaking.  From the trailer, the scenes - in a modern movie - of WW-II POW situations in Asia... I wonder how accurate this trans-Pacific story can be?  So many before it (most) have got it wrong in one way or another.  Understanding another culture is not actually an easy thing to do - add in time and you're nearly guaranteed nine parts fiction for every one part that actually matches (somewhat) what it's supposed to match.

Fifty Shades of Grey
Huh... OK, a 2015 version of the 1986 movie “9½ Weeks” - this time with helicopters, etc.  I remember when watching “9½ Weeks” in 1986, a scene with a CD being pulled automatically into a CD player seemed futuristic.  Time flies...  //  I looked up 9½ Weeks and see the character's name was “Gray”!  Ha-ha!  So is that what the “Grey” in “Fifty Shades of Grey” is?  Just a coincidence you say?  Yeah, okay, sure, whatever....

If I Were You
Two women decide to tell each other how to live their lives.  Comedy, maybe funny....

Monster-In-Law
Looks like a fun comedy movie.  Trailer got me smiling, can't be all bad.  Think I'll check this one out.

City of Angels
Saw this one before.  Good movie.  Romantic... not comedy, but a romantic movie.  Liked it before - think I'd like to see it again.  (It's an old movie, BTW.)

Silk
After spending all this time in Japan, I'm reluctant to see Hollywood movies that feature Japan at any point in history, as they tend to get it wrong, but this looks like it might... might be interesting....  The story line (from what I gather from the preview) revolves around a man coming to Japan to acquire material and/or know-how for silk production.  I seem to recall reading about some actual event like that happening historically, although I thought it took place in China, not Japan?  (I need to look that up when I get time.)

The Cobbler
Looks like a fun comedy to see!  Cobbler discovers magic machine in the basement that makes shoes that transform the wearer into the original owner of the shows.... 2015?  It's still 2014!  Guess I'm going to have to wait for this one.

The Longest Week
Romantic comedy about rich playboy that gets cut off from his rich family's money supply.  Looks like it might be entertaining.

Third Person
Oh... now this definitely looks interesting.  Writer overseas getting mixed up in things....  A movie for people beyond the young student stage of life.  (I was about to say it was an “adult movie” when I realized that term has been taken already to represent something entirely different - age-restricted movies for adolescents....).

Well - that's what I have for now.  I like movies, but haven't been watching many of them for some time now.  What I've found in the past, is that actually makes me easy to please in a way (movie-wise)... in spite of what my comments above may indicate!  What I remember from back when I rented a lot of movies, is that if you watch too many movies in too short a time, you get hyper-critical of them and can't just enjoy the story.  Maybe that's why there are so many Bang!-Bang!-Bang!, Zoom!-Zoom!-Zoom! movies - they aim to give you an adrenaline fix that bypasses thinking.  While you're waiting for the next Bang! or Zoom!, you stop thinking about the idiocy of the story line and lack of any intelligent content in the dialog....

Train Rider Vampires and Ginza Exhibitions

Transcribed from handwritten text:

2014/12/05 - [Onboard inbound train]

I've often complained about the recorded announcements in trains, but there is one aspect of them that is quite nice (or *can* be nice), and that is a consistent volume level.  I'm reminded of this by the train I'm currently riding in, in which the conductor is reading the announcements live (nice), but has (unfortunately) set the volume level so high that it's actually physically painful to listen to (not so nice).

2014/12/05 - 16:40 - [Inbound Seibu-Shinjuku Line train]

I brought an audio recorder with me today.  As I put it in my pocket, I envisioned getting started on the walk to the station, and then talking on the station platform (while waiting for the train), etc.  It didn't happen.  The problem with dictating things outside, is you need at least a little bit of space between yourself and others, and that hasn't happened... yet.  I'm hoping to do some voice-writing later on.  Writing things by hand, as I am now, is wonderful, etc., but it takes so much time!

Incidentally - as I write - I'm continually having to stop and plug my ears to lower the volume of the announcement to a level that isn't painful.  It's too bad, because otherwise, the live announcement is actually pleasant to listen to.

The middle-aged woman sitting to my left... either she has exceptionally wide hips (possible) or likes being glued to me.  It feels quite unpleasant, so I suppose she's a vampire.  I say that in a joking way, but some people really do seem to suck energy out of the people they're near.  For example - the woman on my right has her elbow in my side, and there's no feeling of damage.  The woman on the left however... is a very different story!

Standing on the platform in Takadanobaba...  Not wide hips.  As I stood up, I checked her left side - lots of room between her and the guy on her left... so I suppose she's vampire.

December 6th, 2014 (at Takadanobaba Station)

It's a weird thing when it's crowded - if it's not very crowded and there are only a few people, everybody is self-conscious about what the other people are doing, but when you get past a certain level of people density, you just kind of tune everybody out and view them as physical obstacles - well, not obstacles, but objects to navigate between.  You can't pay attention to any individual for very long.

I'm in Takadanobaba Station now, heading for the exit closest to the BigBox building... a camera is watching me as I go out the gate....

I don't know if this is going to work or not, but one thing about this I just realized, is that I don't need to describe sound effects, because the sounds are in the background automatically.

As I walk out of Takadanobaba Station, I see seasonal illumination out on the pedestrian traffic island, with the usual crowd of students there milling about - many of them probably from Waseda University.

The problem with dictation is that at some point, I have to sit down, listen to this, and type it up, which really sucks.  I'll have to see if I can get a program to put recorded voice into text.  The technology exists of course, but I don't personally have it....

Well, let me play this back and see if it's working OK.

December 6th, 2014 (walking into subway)

And we're rolling again...  I just realized something else nice about recordings.  In this day and age, people are becoming hyper-sensitive to cameras, which is ironic, because basically no one has any privacy any more anyway, since every time they go outside, their every move is being recorded by security cameras.  With a voice recorder though, you can *describe* situations that you couldn't take photos of.

December 6th, 2014 (making transfer at Nihonbashi from Tozai Line to Ginza Line)

I'm in the middle of making a transfer from the Tozai Line to the Ginza Line at Nihonbashi... I've got to get used to the idea that I can be dictating while I'm walking around.  And the sound effects!  I don't know why I didn't think of that before!  Come to think of it... one of the things that has repeatedly surprised me when watching old videos I took, is how the sound is often more important than the pictures for bringing back old memories.  So much is in the sound...

[Back to the present as I transcribe the recording: I then go on to talk about the sounds in the background, but it's kind of pointless to transcribe that when all you can experience right now is this text.  Maybe someday I'll put together a CD with these recording on it.]

In Nihonbashi, by the Tokyo Square Garden Building...

In Kyobashi... standing in front of Gallery.b.Tokyo... the exhibition there now is: Moteki Tamana (茂木たまな展) - let's have a look...

I'm now standing in the gallery and I've received permission to make a recording while I'm standing here.  There are two pictures in particular I'm really interested in - there's one that I told the artist kind of reminded me of the set for Blade Runner.  She didn't seem to agree with that, so I pointed out that actually the scenes in that movie are based on Tokyo... but anyway, apparently the painting that I like is based on one of the back streets in Ueno.

It's pretty cool... it's very realistic in feeling and has kind of a dreamy quality to it with no hard edges... but very realistic in capturing the atmosphere and feeling of those Ueno back streets.

On the other side of the room there's a painting that's kind of a blur of motion - depicting a busy train station.  It's an interesting thing, because when you're in a busy station, anything you look hard at is in focus, but everything is always in motion, and so as a whole, it's kind of a big blur in a way, and you can't spend much time looking at any one thing.  As in real life, the people in the foreground are clearer, but still their faces are not clear enough to identify.  It actually seems like that when you're navigating through a station like Tokyo, Shinjuku, Ueno, etc.  While you *could* take a hard look at someone walking by you (going the other way), that would take away from instantaneous navigation duties and so usually you don't really see anyone - even the people who are right by you.

So - again - the picture is very realistic in feeling and atmosphere, and dreamy in the details.  A very cool combination of a clear atmosphere and a dreamy effect.

At Tokyo Station... on one of the Yamanote (and Keihin-Tohoku) Line platforms, waiting for a Yamanote Line train.  Hmm... now I've pulled out the audio recorder, the machine is kind of standing between me and the atmosphere, but before I pulled it out....

Anyway - what prompted me to want to comment was the vibrancy of the city, with people rushing around, trains coming and going, constant motion, etc.  This actually ties in with the painting I saw earlier in the evening at Gallery.b.Tokyo - the dreamy quality of the painting is pretty close to the overall effect.  If you stop and focus on something, you can see it, but it's within a constant sea of motion, so there's no one point (in time or location) where you can take everything in.  It's pretty cool actually.

1990 Ueno, Tamachi, Shinjuku, Etc.; 2014 Ginza, Shinjuku, Etc.

This batch opens with views of 1990 Ueno Ameyokocho - an area that visually *looks* quite similar today, but *feels* a bit different.  The area has become a little more of a tourist destination for foreign tourists, and a little less of a shopping destination for local residents.  Or at least that's how it seems to me - I could be wrong.
After that is a trip to Omiya, trips to Tamachi, Machida, Shinjuku, Machida, etc.  Thinking back on this period of video recording, I think I had separated the use of the two cameras I had into using the one this batch was recorded with for daily around town stuff, and the other (newer and better) camera for video recording expeditions.

Although this was taken back in September(!), I remember this one very clearly.  I was in Akihabara when I noticed an unusual rattling sound and looked up - discovering the source of the sound to be the many metal rollers inside the vertical metal frames for vertical display banners - being pushed back and forth in the metal frames by a fairly strong wind.

They used to have more of these on building sides, but they're much less common now.  Outside billboard-style advertising in general is becoming less and less common, since people are walking around looking down at their cell-phone-computer screens all the time and hardly ever bother to look around when they're outside.

The timing for this video was good and after pulling out of the station at the same time as the train on the other platform (and briefly running in parallel) a JR train comes alongside and then while passing under another JR line, a train is going by overhead while we pass underneath.  All in all, it was  a great ride for seeing other trains.

Teaching/Learning English

Verbal communication - not the same as written.  Superb writers are often poor speakers; and smooth talkers often can't write properly....

Context - very often missing from general studies of a foreign language.

Logistics - Verbal communication best taught one-to-one - there is only so much a teacher can do when the ratio is 35-1.

Deep-Brain Automatic Responses - Necessary for true communication, but largely missing with students of a radically different language - such as between eastern and western languages.

Vocabulary - Not exchangeable on a word-by-word basis, but this fluid concept takes a lot of time to sink in.

Foundation of Basic Grammar - Important, but difficult to mesh smoothly with the moving and imperfect targets that languages are.

Group Repeat - Logistically useful, but many in a large group fail to get it right or even to participate.

A-B-A-B-A-B Chain Practice - Maximum speaking time for students (outside of pair work that is), but with the drawback that the students are talking with each other and not with a native speaker (who can, however, correct pronunciation and intonation while monitoring the conversation practice as it progresses through a group of students - best not much larger than about 15.  (Around six or seven students is much better of course.)

Teacher and Student One-to-One Practice - Opportunity for students to speak directly with/to a native speaker, but with the drawback that students can only practice half of a conversation at a time.

Reading - Reading stories and other interesting material that is.  Textbooks are often clinical and devoid of the magic of interesting conversations.

Listening - Fairly easily done with modern technology (electronic files played back on cell phones, etc.), but students need to push on even when much of what they're listening to is (at first) flying by with little comprehension.

Pair Practice - Logistically wonderful in that a large group can all be practicing a language simultaneously, but dangerous in that the students don't fully know if what they're doing is accurate in content, pronounced correctly, or with sensible intonation.

Culture - Vitally important, but often missing from textbooks which tend to use Frankenstein text with the context and life stripped from it.

Reset-Return to Pre-Word Thinking - Non-Verbal Pure Thought Utilization of Target Language Vocabulary - Words, at their best, are clumsy tools to express non-verbal thought processes.  Non-comprehension of this vital element of language and communication (not the same thing) leads to losing the meaning and then mechanically using words, resulting in nonsensical usage and sophistry.  Ironically, this is more of an issue for native speakers of English than foreign students of the language....

"Passing On the Dim Torch" (Ranting...)

I remember when I was in my mid-twenties (23-26), I would see an older person (40's, 50's, etc.) and think "You're on the way down - now it's my turn...".  Fast forward three decades and I'm (in my fifties) having some very frustrating/irritating encounters with people in their mid-twenties.  Whether they're right or they're wrong, they are always (to themselves) Right by virtue of being Wonderful and Young.  When they're right, I try to recognize it and kind of shake my head at myself, thinking: "Try not to be too rigid...", but when they are Very Clearly Wrong, their arrogance and General Nastiness are no joy to behold.

The older I get, the more amazed I am at how Truly Amazingly Stupid so many people are, and - being a humanoid biped myself, I realize I'm not exempt from this criticism.  Humans appear not to be equipped with much in the way of CPU power....

1990 Kanda, Shinjuku, Machida, Etc.; 2014 Shinjuku, Osaki, Ginza, Etc.

Views of 1990 and 2014.  The 1990 views are basically a 1990 version of taking video here and there while going about the city for other reasons, so there are a lot of central Tokyo views.  The 2014 videos include views of Ueno Park, the large pedestrian overpass at Ueno Station, Ginza, etc.  (The photos this time, by the way, are fairly random - some related to nearby video links and some unrelated.)

At the time, due to the scheduling of the reserved-seat express trains, I tended to go from Shinjuku to Machida via Romance Car train (but not the other way), and it was always the first generation of the train that I rode, so this view stands out for two reasons.  First, I was going in the other direction, from Machida to Shinjuku, and it was a newer type of Romance Car.

I stumbled into an unusual situation on September 19th, 1990 by arriving at the Romance Car platform just in time for the train, and then unwittingly boarding an extra section of the train that had been added specifically for a large group of traveling students.  Since the two parts of the train were separated by control cabs, it wasn't possible to (internally) go from one half to the other half, so I had to stay with the students all the way to Machida.  At the time, I regretted the mistake, but in retrospect, it was a lucky mistake, as it now provides a rare view of a group of 1990 high school students on a long-distance trip together.

I didn't realize it at the time, but I heard soon after taking this view that this building is slated for demolition in the not too distant future.  I was prompted to take out my camera after looking down and being struck with how well maintained and clean the old type tile floor was (not small ceramic tiles, but the larger type, made of some mysterious material).  The tiles have been polished so often over decades (I think) that they have a sort of melted appearance in places where they have worn down.

1990 Shinjuku, Machida Etc.; 1992 Nogata Etc.; 1993 Tozai Line Etc.; 2014 Osaki, Ginza Etc. Etc.

There is material from four years in this batch - from 1990, 1992, 1993, and 2014.  Thinking of what to say right now regarding this batch, it all kind of blends together... so I'll just start going over them one-by-one and comment after some of them.  (Which I proceeded to do after writing the above, but ran out of time midway through the list, so nearly all the comments are at the top of this batch of video links.

An unusually relaxed atmosphere at a Tokyo Station platform on a hot August afternoon.  The period between the lunch rush and the evening rush is probably the most relaxed.

東京駅-新宿駅 夕方中央線 Tokyo to Shinjuku - Evening Chuo Line 140805
http://youtu.be/hLp0Xp3tpy0

I like the beginning of this one - looking back instead of forward as the train departs Tokyo Station.  At the beginning of the twilight period, there's are some glass reflections, etc. as well.  Incidentally, this is the only surface train that runs within the Yamanote Line - all other lines (in this area) are subways - so it's kind of a special section of track.

To be nit-picky, you could say that the local version of the train is a different line, but they run together within the Yamanote Line, save for a slight divergence between Ochanomizu and Akihabara, so....)

A quiet late night platform out in suburbia.  When it's cold, there's an inpatient feeling of wanting the train to come as soon as possible, but when it's warm, you just kind of zone out and wait while daydreaming about something.

Jumping back to 1992...

1992 Tokyo Suburbs 東京住宅街 自転車とか 921010
http://youtu.be/xxxTU6jXUnA

A sunny Saturday look around in a few Tokyo suburbs visited by bicycle.  Nothing exciting, but it shows the mix of houses, apartment buildings, roads, some farmland, a small river, etc.

1992 上野動物園など Ueno Zoo Etc 921010
http://youtu.be/Bx9pU8abkf0

The title just says the zoo, but this also shows the trip from Hibarigaoka to Kanda, and then from Kanda to Ueno.  At about 0:41, the view out the window of the Yamanote Line shows empty land around (I think) Akihabara that used to be rail freight yards and has since been developed.  I think it's where the giant Yodobashi Camera store is now.  With this old material, it's sometimes hard to tell, as there are large gaps between things.  After the Yamanote Line views are views of Ueno Zoo, the monorail there, etc.

After the zoo (from about the 3:32 mark), are views of the small amusement park for children beside the zoo.  It's quite crowded and lively in this 1992 view.  The last time I went there (on a rather hot day) there were hardly any kids there at all.  The ever-lower birthrate really has changed the feel of the city.  You used to see a lot more kids out and about.  Come to think of it - the kids in this view from 22 years ago are some of the very people not having children now....

From around 4:56, I reenter Ueno Station and there are platform views (of the old type painted trains, etc.).

Going off topic a bit here.  I sometimes get complaints in the comment section of my YouTube videos saying that people want to see "uncut" views of things I've posted.  I think what they're not comprehending is that I always carried a camera back then and had a finite supply of (fairly expensive) tape to use.  Also the cameras were expensive, complicated, and forever breaking down.  When they were working and I had plenty of tape, there was the issue of Nickel-Cadmium batteries, whose life rapidly shortened over weeks of use.  They would start at a little over an hour of camera running time, and that would steadily shorten until they only provided five to ten minutes of power between charging.  To have enough power, I carried about six of them, so usually I didn't run out of power (once I had stocked up on enough batteries after running out of power too often in 1990).  Nickel-Cadmium batteries are heavy by the way, I did a number on my knees back then always carrying around that weight.  Anyway....

Wait... there's actually a reason that overshadows all of the stuff I wrote above!  Once material is digitized, it's fairly easy to edit, but back when I took this material, there was only analog!  The original tapes of the old material are not digital.  And when editing from tape to tape in analog, the quality degenerates rapidly.  Add in the wear and tear on the mechanically complicated equipment, and the result is that post production editing was no joke.  So I was trying hard to do in-camera editing.  Now it makes sense to over-record everything and edit it later (although what I post recently are unedited single clips), but back then, there was a strong incentive to have the material ready to view right out of camera - and thus I practiced in-camera editing.

1992 野方一丁目など Nogata Walkabout 921017
http://youtu.be/EEqvz-JLyOk

(After a train and bus ride) views of suburbia closer to the center of Tokyo.  Nogata is next to Nakano.  The look is pretty much the same as suburbia views back then in areas all over Tokyo.  Since then, development is a little more diverse, so there's a little more differentiation between different areas.

1992 夜の高円寺と阿佐ヶ谷など Koenji and Asagaya at Night Etc 921017
http://youtu.be/wlMZ9pZ-a9Q

Depending on when I was recording views and sounds of Tokyo between 1990 and 1993, I tried different things - from leaving the camera on for continuous views, to a series of very short clips.  This almost seven minute video starts off with some fairly detailed views of evening streets near the Chuo Line, but towards the end includes short clips that I've left tacked onto this material, but don't fit into the flow of the first half of the video so well.  But, personally, I don't think that's an issue really - Tokyo provides so much visual and audible stimulation, that images kind of blur together in real life too.  There are some short train views in this as well.

1992 日曜日の池袋散策散歩など Sunday Ikebukuro Walkabout 921025
http://youtu.be/BSiCUfLdogQ

The places I recorded back then basically fell into one of two categories.  Either I just recorded things while I went about my routine (on the way to work, going home, etc.) or I went somewhere specifically to record the sights and sounds of an area.

I had a map back then that I would highlight the areas I had walked around in with my camera, and when I was going out for new pictures, I would aim for an area of Tokyo that I hadn't yet covered.  So, by 1992, I was beginning to cover some off-the-beaten-path areas, and this video of an area of Ikebukuro that I don't normally go to would fall into that category.

The early part of the video shows trains passing, etc., and feels like a photographer out looking for pictures instead of letting them find him, but it gets more interesting as I walked nearer to the station area.

The type of buses running now have changed, so these old bus views are nostalgic for me.  If you haven't ridden the buses back then, then they probably look about the same as buses everywhere.  The differences are in the details (bus stop recordings, wooden floors, etc.).

http://youtu.be/r6T5E8K7NaI

August 23rd, 1992 - a Sunday.  I set off to see the mountainous areas of Tokyo.  This is a good travel video - with views on the Chuo Line as it rolls away from central Tokyo and the number of passengers decreases as I get closer to the mountains.  Views of the scenery rolling by - views of the relaxed scene inside the half-empty train car with the windows up, and ending with a view of the old Itsukaichi Station.

I over-optimistically thought I would walk from one branch of the Chuo Line (the Itsukaichi Line) to another (the Ome Line), but fortunately, a nice family offered me a ride.  If they hadn't, I probably would have ended up spending the night on the mountain - without food or water.  It was a really stupid decision I made, but I was saved from my own stupidity by the kindness of strangers....

Note:  There would be much more to this video, but the driver had music playing most of the time and the record companies would likely attack me if I included those parts, so I've cut them out.

1993 東京彼方此方 東西線など Tokyo Here and There - Tozai Line Etc 930706
http://youtu.be/uWgDaTqzACk

There's a lot in this video, but - watching it again as I type this - part of it was exploring stations on the Tozai Line, and then I spent some time in Iidabashi, and then in Shinjuku, etc. etc.

By 1993, I was beginning to give up on taking video... the analog tapes were difficult to edit with the equipment I had, my cameras were breaking down, and I was spending more time taking regular pictures than video.  So in videos like this one, I would take a little here, and then a little there, but I wasn't attempting to record everything the way I did in 1990 and 1991 (1992 falls in-between those two modes).

All a long way of saying that there are so many places in this video, it's hard to identify them all.  The good thing about my 1993 material is that the camera handling is much smoother than in 1990, for example.

And back to 2014... I would have take a lot more videos in August 2014, but in the heat, my clothes were soaked with sweat and so I couldn't use my pockets to hold my camera for fear of damaging it with the sweat.  Once the camera was in its case in my backpack, I took it out less than I ordinarily would.  And also... times have changed.  Conditions in the 21st century are that the better and more convenient the equipment gets, the harder it becomes to use it (for non-technical reasons).
