2000年の新橋 - Shinbashi (with an "n")

Shinbashi is one of the areas of Tokyo that I often went to in the 1980's, starting in 1984.  At the time, JNR (国鉄) spelled it "Shinbashi" and while I think "し" should be written "shi" and not "si", I disagree with writing "ん" as "m"... ever.  "ん" is "n" - period.  I strongly think that writing it as "m" is a mistake.  I wouldn't bother to explain this, but from time-to-time people assume I'm misspelling 新橋 when I write it as "Shinbashi".  No, no mistake.  Shinbashi is the correct way to spell it.  Of the various forms of romanization for Japanese, Hepburn romanization is probably best, but writing "ん" as "m" is an error.

As you can see from these photos, Shinbashi had a stronger architectural connection with the past in 2000 than it does today (2022 as I write this).  If I had had a camera in 1984, the trains would have been solid green for the Yamanote Line and solid blue for the Keihin-Tohoku Line.

Today some people are horrified by the concept of there being no platform walls (no, it's not a "screen"), but that's just the way all the stations were before.

The fountain in the SL Plaza in front of Shinbashi Station.  A really strange thing about it is how for many people (myself included) it disappeared without its disappearance being immediately noticed.  On one visit to Shinbashi I suddenly realized it was gone.  So I asked around and most of the people I talked to had basically the same reaction.  They knew it was gone, but had no idea when it had disappeared.

Below is a fairly rare example of a building that goes back several decades but is still in use and (as far as I know) isn't planned for demolition anytime soon.

1991 Hyakunincho, Shibuya, Tokorozawa, Etc.; 2014 Shinbashi, Otsuka, Ginza, Etc.

This batch of videos starts off with a look around at my surroundings on an apartment building rooftop in Hyakunincho (which I had gotten to by walking from Takadanobaba Station).  From there, I walked through Hyakunincho to Okubo Station, did some train watching from a building window by the station, and then went to Harajuku.
百人町
百人町

大久保

Getting off a Yamanote Line train in Harajuku, I walked over to Yoyogi Park and walked around a bit inside the park - watching a group of people (students?) taking video of a pair of actors, etc.
From Yoyogi Park, I walked to Shibuya Station, taking in the Saturday evening summer youth scene there as I made my way towards the station.
I must have wanted to get out of the heat for a bit, because I spent some time going through (via escalator after escalator) a department store full of young people shopping for clothes.
From Shibuya, I took a Toyoko Line train to Hiyoshi Station, which was under construction at the time.  From the station, I rode in a car with some friends, which captures something of the era (in-between the frames) via the conversation in the car and and the on-air radio interview heard in the background.

2014 views are of Shinjuku, Shinbashi, Otsuka, etc.  - I'll comment after some of them below.

A few years ago, I spoke with an artist at an art exhibition who was displaying (among other things) some interesting conceptual drawings of how the artist thought Ginza should be.  Instead of the current Chuo-Dori, with its six-lane (four for moving and two for parked vehicles) wide expanse of lifeless asphalt, and two-lane wide expanse of lifeless cement (for pedestrians), it had a narrow two-lane road for only essential fire-breathing machinery and the rest was a park-like expanse of grass, trees, and walkways through the green for humans.

Now that would really be nice!  Keeping all the cars out of the area on Sundays is certainly nice, but walking around on that sea of lifeless asphalt is never all that fun really.  I much prefer the two-lane back streets that machinery operators mostly avoid (7-days a week, 24-hours a day) since they can't drive at speed on them.

"2014 Shinjuku, Big Snowstorm, Otsuka, etc; 1992 Sugamo, Shibuya, Shinbashi, Koiwa Snow, etc."

A couple of things stand out in this batch for me - one, a couple of views of the big snowstorm of February 8th, 2014 (and coincidentally - I didn't go looking for it - views of the day after a big snowstorm in January 1992, taken on February 1st, 1992), and a fairly long look (27:33) at a festival in Sugamo - on the street generally called "Obasan-no-Harajuku" (おばあさんの原宿), although the street is actually called "Sugamo Jizo-Dori Shotengai" (巣鴨地蔵通商店街).  Other than those are the usual train scenes, etc.

This is the area I mentioned at the top of this post - properly called "Sugamo Jizo-Dori Shotengai" (巣鴨地蔵通商店街), but popularly called Obasan-no-Harajuku (おばあさんの原宿).  There is actually some pretty interesting content within this one.  Something I hadn't thought about much at the time, but I realized upon watching this again while editing, is that the man standing in front of a crowd and giving a kind of presentation, is a real-life version of a scene in many of the Tora-san (Otoko-wa-Tsuri-yo) movies.  After watching all the movies in that series, and then (after two decades) seeing this video of mine again, a light clicked on and I thought "Ah!  There it is!  That's part of what they based the Tora-san character on!"

This one is seriously long (51:37), and not very exciting (it was taken on a Sunday, after all), although the part where I walk through a small time-slip zone may be of historical interest (I'm pretty certain that area has been demolished and built up since then), and the scene on a rooftop, with the sea of buildings in Shinbashi all around, is kind of interesting (in my opinion it is anyway!).

What I was doing with this one, was walking through the side streets of Shinbashi on my way from Shinbashi Station to Tokyo Tower.  This video ends just as I arrive at Tokyo Tower, and for the trip up Tokyo Tower, have a look at the following video:

1992年の東京タワー Visiting Tokyo Tower in 1992 - 920126

It was interesting to me to come across views of a lot of snow on the ground on February 1st, 1992, since there's a bit of snow on the ground now as well.  For places that regularly get a lot of snow, naturally there it is, year after year, but Tokyo generally gets very little, so the years where a big storm drops enough to pile up and shut down traffic for a day are notable/memorable.

"Kawagoe, Shinjuku, Shinbashi, Hamamatsucho, Ginza, Etc."

Past the heat of August, the temperatures in September are just about perfect.  It would be nice if this wonderful weather would stretch out into December or something.
It's been kind of an active couple of weeks - with exhibitions in Ginza (including my own), trips to Kawagoe, Shinjuku, Ueno, Shinbashi, Hamamatsucho, etc. etc.  I'll comment on some of the video links below.

This is something that people almost never seem to notice, but old rails (railway rails - after wearing down and being replaced) used to be used for various things, most commonly walkways, platform roof supports, etc. at railway stations, but also as fence posts, as shown in this video.

During the hottest days of August, you are so preoccupied with thinking about - or trying not to think about - the heat, that you don't have much contemplative room to really take in details like the sound of insects.  Once the weather cools a little, but before the summer insects disappear from the scene, then the sound of them singing away produces a combination thought, the first part being "They sound really nice in the woods...", but as you contemplate the sound, a melancholy feeling comes over you as you envision the sound fading away, the wind getting colder, the leaves falling, and another unpleasantly cold winter beginning....

Masses of Birds in Kawagoe (in the trees) 川越の鳥鳥鳥 (130918)
http://youtu.be/fUv6vJVDR74

A very boring video - I don't recommend this one, unless you want to hear what they sounded like in the trees.  As I was nearing the area, there were great masses of them flying together in the sky, but by the time I got there, they had mostly settled down (noisily) to perches in the trees.  I was hoping they would perform another mass flyover, so I kept the camera rolling for a couple of minutes.  If you're into birds, you might like this one.
